Insanely Powerful Laptops: Aorus 15G YB - i9-10980HK and RTX2080 Super Max-Q - Overview

Updated: Sep 29, 2020

Powerful laptops have come a long way. Just a few years ago, you needed a huge chassis to house more powerful components. However, times have changed. Nowadays, we can get our hands on some of the most powerful laptops in smaller footprints. A prime example is the Aorus 15G YB. It packs a punch in almost every single aspect of an extraordinary gaming laptop, especially for its size.

Without further ado, let’s take a quick look at this monster of a gaming laptop: The Aorus 15G YB. The Aorus 15G is the flagship gaming laptop offered by Taiwanese company Gigabyte. The Aorus branding is Gigabyte’s gaming PC and laptop side. The Aorus 15G comes in multiple different configurations, but I will be expressing my thoughts on the highest-end model, the 15G YB.

Firstly, let’s look at the specs. The Aorus 15G YB has the latest and greatest intel i9-10980HK 8 core processor. This is a beast of a CPU. Next, it has an extremely powerful NVIDIA Geforce RTX 2080 SUPER Max-Q graphics card. This insane graphics card packs 8GB of fast GDDR6 video RAM. It will be able to handle almost any triple-A titles that you throw at it. Not only that, the Aorus 15G YB has 32GB of DDR4 RAM, which is plenty. It comes with 512GB of super fast NVME storage too. This is the best specs ever on a portable 15-inch device.

For these kinds of specs, you can expect to play these games at good FPS: Counter-Strike Go, Microsoft Flight Simulator, FIFA 18, Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Monster Hunter: World, Rainbow Six Siege, Doom Eternal, and more. It can basically run any game that you can think of at a reasonable frame rate, which is awesome.

Now that you have seen the insane specs inside, you might think it is going to be an extremely chunky laptop. But no, it is not by any means. It weighs just 2.2kg, and has a thickness of about 2.5cm. It is even just a 15-inch chassis, not the normal 17-inch ones you might see with this kind of CPU and GPU muscle. More impressively, it even packs a massive 94WHr battery for long-lasting battery life on the go, claiming to get up to 8h on a single charge. This means a lot to portability of the laptop. You can bring it anywhere you go, without worrying about battery or heft.

Putting this many features inside a relatively thin chassis is already insane, but here comes the even more surprising part:

The Aorus 15G’s killer feature onboard is the OMRON mechanical keyboards. With 1.6mm of key travel, it is a true mechanical keyboard. I tried it out when I went to a demo booth one day, and it felt super satisfying to type and game on. It is tactile and responsive. Not only that, but it also comes with per-key-RGB, which you can customise to your liking. Really amazed to see such an amazing keyboard on a small form factor laptop.

Next, the screen is also amazing, as you might have expected. It has a SHARP 240Hz IPS panel. This panel is an amazing laptop screen. It has great viewing angles, high refresh rate, low response times and an amazing 72% NTSC colour gamut coverage. It has 100% sRGB colour accuracy out of the box, so content creation on this machine is definitely possible, when combined with that RTX 2080 Super Max-Q graphics card.

Finally, to wrap up, it has a wide port selection for better convenience. It has the Windforce Infinity cooling technology, which can keep the internals cool while running. However, like everything inside, the price is also insane. For the specs, I would definitely still say that it might be worth it. The Aorus 15G YB starts at $5000, but you can get the i7-10875H with RTX 2060/2070 graphics for a cheaper price. Do you think you will get this insanely powerful laptop? Let me know what you think!
